Safe sulky alternative sought by Councillor

Robbie Byrne reports

SINN Féin Councillor Jim Griffin has called for a “safe alternative” to be found for Waterford’s sulky riders.
The request came after several reports of sulky racing at the Saleens, Tramore and Woodstown Beach during low tide.
Speaking at the March meeting of Waterford Metropolitan City & County Council, Cllr Griffin said that “accidents and negative publicity over recent months has forced sulky riders off public highways and onto our beaches.”
Following a request to review beach by-laws, Cllr Griffin noted that while it is “not a huge problem today, a serious accident is inevitable if such racing continues into the summer months.
“A few years back we had a similar problem with the use of quad bikes in the back strand and an alternative location was found on wasteland close to Waterford Airport, Cllr Griffin said. “The very same can be done here.”
