Going Green for Grace

Waterford’s Green Girl secures EU seat

WATERFORD has seen the election of its first MEP following Grace O’Sullivan’s success in Ireland South. It was a long hard road and marathon count that went on for over a week which finally saw the Green Party candidate take a seat.Grace managed to overtake the 2,000 vote lead that sitting MEP Deidre Clune (FG) held, putting her in position for the fourth seat after Sean Kelly (FG), Billy Kelleher (FF) and Mick Wallace (Ind) had been elected.

An objection by Sinn Féin was withdrawn as, after a recount, the margin between their candidate, Liadh Ní Riada, and Grace had widened in favour of the latter.
This resulted in the elimination of the sitting MEP. After the count, Grace said she was hugely humbled and privileged to have been chosen by the people of Ireland South and would work to promote the Green agenda in Europe. Transfers from Mick Wallace had increased the margin for Grace to 7,000 plus votes. This gave her the fourth seat in Ireland South on Wednesday last after a 12 day saga.
