WATERFORD City & County Council has committed to exploring a possible Greenway extension to Portlaw.
Last year, Councillors in the Comeragh District passed a motion calling for such an extension from the Waterford Greenway to be explored.
At the recent February Comeragh District meeting of Waterford City & County Council, Cllr Declan Clune (SF) sought an update.
He pointed out that a right of way already exists along the route in question.
In response, Director of Services Fergus Galvin said the extension to Portlaw has not yet been explored by Waterford City & County Council.
“Our concentration for this year is on trying to complete the link between Bilberry and the city centre. That’s the focus of our attention at the moment,” he explained.
However, Mr Galvin said the extension to Portlaw will be “kept on the cards” but is dependent on time and resources.
He said Waterford City & County Council hope to complete the link from Bilberry to the city centre this year or at least reach the advanced planning stage.
He said the Council may then look at other options such as an extension to Portlaw.
The first anniversary of the official opening of the Waterford Greenway occurs next week.
Since its opening in March 2017, the new amenity has attracted more than 250,000 visitors and provided a huge economic boost to County Waterford.
