Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has appealed to the leaderships of both Waterford and Carlow Institutes of Technology to agree on their merger plan in advance of formally submitting a bid for Technological University (TU) status.

Speaking at the WIT Arena on Friday last, hours after the TU Bill passed through its final stages in the Oireachtas, Mr Varadkar implored both ITs “to really get on with it over the next couple of months and to come together (so) that we can have a TU here in the South East, as soon as possible”.
In response, WIT President, Professor Willie Donnelly said that both ITs are “fully committed to the delivery of a Technological University of the South East. We have waited long enough and now we are going to deliver a University of international quality that this region deserves
