Man charged over Tramore murder

A 32-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Kilkenny native Michael O’Dwyer at a holiday home complex in Tramore last Thursday.

Tadhg Butler, with an address at Seafield in Tramore – but originally from Kilkenny – was brought before a special sitting of Waterford District Court on Saturday afternoon and charged with the murder of O’Dwyer (25).

He was remanded in custody to appear again in court in Waterford on Tuesday.

The deceased, who resided in Stoneyford, Co Kilkenny with his mother, was found with stab wounds to the chest by the emergency services responding to a callout, at around 11.30pm. He was brought to Waterford Regional Hospital, where he later died. State pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy travelled to WRH on Friday afternoon to perform an autopsy on Mr O’Dwyer.

Mr Butler, of 30 Seafield, Tramore, was arrested at 11.41pm on Thursday and detained at Tramore Garda Station under Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act. He was brought before the District Court on Saturday and remanded in custody, where defence solicitor Ken Cunningham indicated that he will be making an application for bail to the High Court on his client’s behalf. He also applied for free legal aid and for Mr Butler to be psychiatrically assessed and monitored in prison.
Kilkenny native Michael O’Dwyer had resided for the last number of years outside Stoneyford in Co Kilkenny with his mother Geraldine. He was the second youngest of five boys and had been pre-deceased by his father in 2011.

Former neighbour and Labour councillor Marie Fitzpatrick described the deceased as a ‘lovely young man’ who came from a well-respected family.
