This year’s 1848 Tricolour Celebration in Waterford will include a visit by President Michael D Higgins, who will attend the naming of the Thomas Francis Meagher Bridge on Thursday, March 12th.

The Celebration Weekend will be held on March 7th and 8th and will host representations from the Embassies of USA, France, Canada and Australia.

In addition, for the fifth year in succession, a delegation from the United States 69th Infantry division, who are based in New York, shall also attend.

The event’s Gala Dinner will take place in The Granville Hotel on the evening of Saturday, March 7th where the guest speaker will be Lt Col James Tierney Retired, Regimental Historian for the 69th Infantry Division, who is an authoritative speaker on Thomas Francis Meagher and the American Civil War.

The main event, the Tricolour Celebration (which is totally free), takes place at 3pm on Sunday 7th March on The Mall.

As with previous years Kieran Doyle will re-enact one of Thomas Francis Meagher’s speeches on the steps of The House of Waterford Crystal before the Irish Tricolour in commemoration of the Tricolour’s first ever flying at 33 The Mall on March 7th 1848.

Musical accompaniment will be provided by the Thomas Francis Meagher Fife and Drum Band and the Barrack Street Concert Band.

The final musical accompaniment on Sunday will be from The Island of Ireland Peace Choir, (formerly the Waterford and Omagh Peace Choir), directed by Phil Brennan.

The event on Sunday will be supported by The Naval Service Reserve (Waterford Unit), members of The Defence Forces and members of The Civil Defence.

In addition, several military veterans associations such as ONE, the Naval Association, United Nations Veterans, and members of the British Legion will also be in attendance.

On Thursday last, the 1848 Tricolour Celebration (2015) was launched at the Granville Hotel, the birthplace of Thomas Francis Meagher by Commitee Chairperson Ann Cusack.

“A school familiarisation programme has been taking place over the last number of weeks and over one thousands school children have heard the TF Meagher story and the significance of the flag and its relationship with peace,” she said.

“Members of the Committee and a local actor have been touring the local schools of Waterford and telling the story of Thomas Francis Meagher.”

The 2015 Committee is composed of: Ann Cusack (Chairperson), James Doherty, Eddie Mulligan, Michael Garland, Janet Carey, Paul Dower, Jonathan Brazil, John Wells, Mags Durand O’Connor and Ann Marie Coughlan.
