For the first time, sprOg is proud to present a children’s opera from Newfoundland, Ann and Seamus, on Tuesday 29th July at 5pm and 7pm – this is one not to be missed! Sponsored by Genzyme and supported by Waterford City Council and Fáilte Ireland, tickets are €7 (group ticket of four €22) and you can book your tickets on 051 855038 or at our box office on O’Connell Street, Waterford.
Ann and Seamus is a chamber opera for young voices, based on the narrative poem by Kevin Major, with music and libretto By Stephen Hatfield, and it will be performed by Shallaway, the Newfoundland and Labrador Youth in Chorus, an internationally renowned children’s choir who have won top place in national and international competitions and received many prestigious international invitations.
This is a powerful and vivid adventure based on a true story of shipwreck, adventure, heroism and love performed by 50 talented young Canadian singers aged 13 to 18. Seventeen-year-old Ann Harvey lived on the treacherous coast of Newfoundland, Canada where, in 1828, an Irish immigrant ship bound from Derry to Quebec was shipwrecked. Ann, along with her father and brother, rescued 168 of the 211 passengers and crew, among them young Séamus Ryan. Their blossoming relationship prompted a difficult choice for Ann: should she leave her home and family for a new life, or stay in Newfoundland. Shallaway come to perform at sprOg after performances in Cork and at the 8th Annual World Choral Symposium in Copenhagen, Denmark, on July 24, 2008.
There are two workshops also taking place on Tuesday 29th July as part of sprOg.
