Students assaulted and robbed on walk home

gardaFour local youths remained in Garda custody at time of going to press following the assault and robbery of two students in Railway Square in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The two students – aged 18 and 19 – were walking home at around 2.10am when they were approached by a male, who asked them the time.

One of the students took out his phone to see the time and the male took his phone and punched the student in the face.

The second student was assaulted by three other youths when he attempted to intervene.

The injured parties were robbed of some property and the youths fled. Neither of the two students were seriously injured in the incident.

During a search of the area, Gardaí arrested subsequently four youths and detained them under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.  Two were detained in New Ross and two in Thomastown. The four arrested are all local and aged 16, 17, 18 and 24.
