Green grass or baize, Alan was a class act

Dear Sir,

I enjoyed reading Matt Keane’s fitting tribute to Alan Barry a great Waterfordian.

I had the pleasure of encountering Alan back in 1987 when he captained a snooker team representing De La Salle that participated in the Carrick-on-Suir Social and Literary Club Inter-Clubs competition. It was a competition that ran for a few years and when in a time, as we all remember, snooker was in its halcyon days it was always a well subscribed and popular competition. Alan’s sporting prowess I’m happy to report was not just reserved for the soccer pitch. He was a smashing snooker player amongst a very talented De La Salle snooker team that included among others Nicky Quinlan; another excellent player. Alan went on to lead his team to win out the competition that saw off opposition from clubs from Clonmel, Carrick, Kilkenny and of course Waterford.

Above all, Alan was a gentleman, good fun and humble in victory. He wore his talent lightly. I’m glad to see nothing has changed.
