Trees at Cathedral Square
Dear Sir,
We are very alarmed to note from newspaper reports that it is intended to fell the trees in Cathedral Square. We find this (proposed) decision to be incomprehensible. These trees add greatly to the beauty of the Square and the quality of life of those living and passing nearby. Not only that, but this proposition would appear to directly contravene the Waterford City Development Plan 2007-2013.
These trees are maturing nicely. It is astonishing and dismaying that the City Council would even think of removing them, especially when one also notes in the Development Plan that “A large proportion of each annual planting scheme consists of replacement of damaged or vandalised specimens.” What possible justification can there be for removing such lovely trees in the current economic situation? Removing them and replanting them with young trees will certainly cost money, when every Local Authority in the country is supposed to be strapped for cash.
Some judicious pruning may be required, but the Horticulturist is fully au fait with how that should be done properly, as will be seen when the new Tree Policy is published.
The idea that some of these trees are hiding one aspect of the Cathedral itself is nonsensical. The wall in question faces north. There is nothing remarkable about it, and the lower windows are actually covered in concrete, so…..?
Yours faithfully,
