Alleged rape on Tramore Road

A 21-year-old man was arrested and released by Waterford Gardaí on Saturday last after being questioned in relation to an alleged rape on the Tramore Road between 11.15pm and 12.15am on Thursday night last.

A file has been sent to the DPP after an incident which has shocked the city, particularly those living within proximity of the Kingfisher Complex.

Gardaí stated that a serious incident occurred on the walkway (which runs over John’s River) opposite the Kingfisher Complex in Kilbarry on Thursday night last and have appealed with anyone with information to contact them at 051-305300.

Sadly, this is not the first time such an offence has occurred in the secluded area, which has long been considered a ‘no-go’ area after nightfall.

In March 2005, a 14-year-old girl was raped in virtually the same location, along a pathway which provides a shortcut into the Cherrymount Housing Estate.

Public lighting in the area, or more pointedly, the lack thereof, has been frequently cited by residents, as well as walkers and runners who use the path in question.
