Construction and engineering group BAM has won the State contract for a major refurbishment programme at Waterford City Courthouse which will treble the amount of available courtrooms.
BAM emerged as the preferred bidder following a tendering process in March of this year for a €135 million deal which will see the development of four new courthouses (in Drogheda, Letterkenny, Limerick and Wexford) and refurbishment and extension of three existing court buildings ( in Cork, Mullingar and Waterford).
The National Development Finance Agency (NDFA) finalised the overall deal in recent days. BAM is the Irish subsidiary of multinational Royal Dutch BAM and three divisions of the group joined forces under the flag of BAM PPP PGGM to bid for the work.
Construction at Waterford Courthouse is expected to commence in November 2015 with final delivery due by November 2017.
The works will treble the amount of available courtrooms from two to six and also include improved custody facilities, court offices and associated facilities.
Plans for a major extension of Waterford City Courthouse were first announced in 2012 but works could not proceed until the old City Fire Station at Catherine Station was vacated to make room for the expansion plans.
The new City Fire Station at Ballybeg is almost complete and this new €7 million building is expected to open in the coming weeks.
