Calls to abandon planned motor tax

Sinn Féin councillor David Cullinane has hit out at the government over its plans to impose a new motor tax on the owners of commercial vehicles.

Commenting on the announcement, Cllr Cullinane said he could see no valid reason for the introduction of such a tax.

“One thing that has to be said about this government is that they have demonstrated great ingenuity in inventing new ways to take money off people,” he said.

“There is absolutely no good reason that I can see for this tax,” he added.

The tax is aimed at penalising license holders who use commercial vehicles for purposes other than work, thereby paying the rate of commercial tax on their vehicle rather than the private rate.

Cllr Cullinane said the tax would create huge inconvenience for many people.

“Many small businesses and indeed employees use commercial vehicles for purposes other than work. Indeed in many instances, a commercial vehicle is the only means of transport that people have,” he said.

Minister for Environment John Gormley has ordered that drivers of commercial 4×4s and small vans legally declare to local authorities that they will not use them for any social, domestic or pleasure purposes.

I mean fair is fair right !
Oh how about the goverment start creating jobs for irish workers and quit thinking of ways to steal from us.
