County Waterford has 18,000 septic tanks
There were some 18,000 septic tanks and on-site waste water treatment systems in County Waterford, said Eamon Lonergan, Senior Executive Engineer, at a presentation on waste water treatment units at a meeting of the Co. Council in Dungarvan, last week.
With the introduction of new legislation, it would become more difficult to operate existing some septic tank systems which involved the ponding of waste water. There was the risk of contamination from overflows of waste water, cracking of holding tanks and sludge build-up.
