De La Salle Brother honoured by International Award

Waterford-based De La Salle Brother Tom Walsh has been honoured for his dedication and contribution to educational facilities throughout the continent of Africa.

Dr Martin McAleese, patron of the awards, presented Brother Walsh with the International Award for Education at the Allianz Awards for Services to Education in the Royal Kilmainham Hospital, Dublin.

Brother Walsh was born and raised in Castleisland, Co Kerry and graduated from De La Salle College in Waterford. Since 1981, when he joined the De La Salle Order, he has been committed to enriching the educational capabilities of youth, both at home and abroad. For the last 10 years Brother Walsh has travelled with a group of volunteers from Ireland to countries such as Togo, Nigeria, Eritrea and Ethiopia where they undertake the construction of facilities such as kindergartens, schools and more recently summer camps; establish centres in local communities where subjects such as English and Maths can be taught and badly needed social services can be provided.
