Disappointing end to 1100 celebrations

Waterford’s 1,100th anniversary celebrations began with a bang but ended in disappointment, Cllr Cha O’Neill has said.

“The year started off great and there was great efforts made in the first six months but I think we took our eye off the ball after that. It is a shame to let the year go out without marking the end of the event.”

Cllr O’Neill was speaking at a recent meeting of the Metropolitan District, during which he also queried the spend of €6,000 on approximately 80 short videos promoting tourism products in the city and county, such as accommodation, activities and visitor attractions. The Council is subsidising the project, enabling tourism providers to commission short videos for €200, with the videos to be used by both the Council and the tourism provider. Cllr O’Neill said a local TV channel was sorely missed in Waterford and queried the provision of a new channel. “There’s no point having these videos in a drawer if there’s nowhere to show them”, he said. District manager Lar Power said the videos were designed to be used on websites, targeting visitors from outside the area.
