Five people were arrested during late night public order incidents last Wednesday night, following the annual ‘Christmas Day’ celebrations amongst local third level students.
Extra Gardaí were deployed to the city centre and also several housing estates close to Waterford Institute of Technology throughout Wednesday in response to reports of large crowds.
Public order incidents were reported in Templars Hall, Manor Street, Lismore Park, Larchville and John Street, Gardaí said.
As a result, five people were resulted for being drunk and disorderly. All of those detained were released without charge and will be dealt with by way of adults cautions, on the spot fines or summonses.
A further two arrests were made at 9am on suspicion of drink driving in what Gardaí said were follow-up operations to the ‘Christmas Day’ festivities.
Both college authorities and the students’ union have distanced themselves from the annual event in recent years, with the college bar opting to close in a bid to discourage excessive drinking.
Separately, the garden wall of a house at Larchville was driven through on Wednesday night. A woman reported hearing a loud bang outside her house, at around 9.20pm.
She looked out and noticed that the wall had been knocked down. A short distance away, a blue Skoda Octavia was alight. A vehicle being driven dangerously was seen in the area prior to these incidents.
