Jaywalking swan ruffles feathers!

RoadSwanA kerb-hopping swan caused traffic jams at rush hour in Waterford City on Tuesday morning. Seen here being approached on Rice Bridge by a plucky Garda (with his fellow officers greatly entertained by their colleague’s attempts to divert it from dry land), the swan’s antics caused tailbacks on both sides of the crossing until it was returned safely to the water by fireman Andrew Quinn of Waterford Animal Rescue. Swans usually station themselves between Adelphi Quay and the Marina Hotel at the mouth of St John’s River, but they have been moving upstream towards the bridge for some reason of late. Perhaps they could be used to clear the Quays which will be closed on two successive Sundays (Sept 12 & 19) for the Waterford Harvest Festival? (See lead story.) This day last week a baby bull calf stranded by the tide at the foot of a cliff at Kilfarassy Strand, Fenor was by Waterford Animal Rescue with the help of the Tramore Inshore Lifeboat.
