Joseph remembered at the Theatre Royal

It was way back in 1975 when Dermot Graham directed Waterford Crystals Tops show ‘Joseph,’ scenes from which will be recaptured in a tribute to him at the Theatre Royal Variety Show from November 8-10.

The decision to produce Joseph, threw the entire Tops fraternity into chaos. Was it a variety show? Yes, said all the Crystal supporters, no, said the all those with a rule book.

It split the city, it was the original Saipan. In the end it made the final and lost. What was the problem? Well the biggest problem was that it was great. A superb production, so good that the famous impresario Noel Pearson cancelled his professional tour of Joseph to Waterford as we had our own. The Royal Variety Show will look back at some of those years with a sequence from Joseph and relive that magic time, while the cast will also present clips another of Dermot’s favourite shows Mack and Mabel.

If you remember the caught in the act opening he did followed by Send in the Clowns you are in for a treat. Des Manahan, David Flynn, Jamie Beamish and Vicki Graham will help us remember those heady days and word has it that the one and only Rocky may appear in his original role as the Elvis/King of Joseph.

There is also a little rumour afoot that one or two hurlers may debut with our madcap comedy team in a GAA sketch.

Richie Hayes School will premiere a piece of the new musical Hair Spray, while Richie himself will definitely perform on Saturday night, with all involved working hard to get him there for Thursday and Friday also. Richie is back to work in the Gaiety Panto and sick notes aren’t allowed. There’s are lots more in this show so book it now and let the winter start with a good laugh and a nostalgic tear.
