Minister Cullen welcomes impact of new roads

Waterford’s Minister, Martin Cullen TD, this week welcomed funding of €9.9m allocated to Waterford City and Waterford County Councils under the Government’s 2010 National Roads Programme. The Minister also confirmed that two key elements of the Dublin to Waterford motorway, the 24km Waterford to Knocktopher and the 40km Knocktopher to Carlow, would open this year enabling the motorway project from Waterford to the capital to be fully completed.

The investment of almost €10 million has been allocated primarily to ongoing finalisation work on the Waterford City Bypass. It will also enable improvement works to be undertaken on the Dungarvan Outer Bypass, safety work on the Knocknagranagh Road and at Carroll’s Cross at the turn off to Kill, also on the N72 Rockfield Road. Annual road resurfacing, pavement resurfacing works, bridge maintenance, route lighting and two pedestrian crossings (at Cappoquin and Lemybrien) are among the initiatives that will also be supported by the funding.

Minister Cullen said: “I am delighted that our major inter-urban motorway from Waterford to Dublin will open for usage as scheduled in 2010. This motorway project is a massive infrastructure investment in the South East’s transport network as it opens up new opportunities for our city and county, improving journey times, reducing congestion and easing the journey to the capital for commuters. A modern society needs a modern infrastructure and this government has committed unprecedented development funding to this area.”
