The ‘paint war’ between Waterford and Kilkenny hurling fans for the ‘flag stone’ on Mount Misery took an unsavoury turn last weekend, when a suspected third party embarked on a spot of defacing.

The latest Waterford flag to be painted on the rock, as exclusively reported in last Friday’s Weekender Edition, has been replaced by a rather crude depiction of manhood.

Answering the call to respond to last Friday’s story, a member of the Kilkenny painting crew claimed that even die-hard Deise fans would prefer the black and amber flag to the current ‘artwork’ on display.

“It might be a bit funny for some people, but it’s not a particularly nice thing to have everyone looking at,” said ‘Charlie’, who didn’t reveal his true identity during a Monday morning phone call. “It’s rude, let’s cut to the chase on it.”

In response to claims made by Deise fan ‘Tom’ that the Waterford painting job was “only a bit of fun”, Charlie queried Tom’s integrity over the ‘battle for Mount Misery’.

“There’s plenty of space there for two flags to be painted,” said Charlie. “But when the Waterford lads decided to paint over a Kilkenny flag that had been there for years, a few of us on this side of the Suir didn’t see anything fun about it.
