Senator Coffey worried about 8,000 ‘missing’ voters

As many as 8,000 Waterford people, who are eligible to vote at Dáil elections, will not be able to exercise their democratic right and a large number of them are likely to be young people.

Senator Paudi Coffey said this week that, for one reason or another, their names were not on the electoral register. “That is a shocking statistic for an area the size of Waterford and one wonders how it could be the case”, he said.

“Primarily, it is due to the fact that our current system for compiling voters’ lists is an administrative mess”, he accused. “In many countries, you have to re-register each year by filling in a simple form to show you are still alive, want to register in that constituency and are available to vote. In Ireland people’s names stay on the electoral register long after they have moved away or even died”, he continued.

“We can test the accuracy of the electoral register by comparing it with the census. Irish and British citizens, over the age of 18, can vote in Ireland in general elections. This is due to a reciprocal voting arrangement between Ireland and the UK whereby Irish citizens can vote for members of the UK Parliament and British citizens for members of the Dáil.

    Why is he worries,
It’s not as if these people we elect into office listen to us when they get there.
Yeah yeah i know that some might say that if you are not on the register you cant vote.
But how many have promised us the sun, the moon and stars and when there in we are forgotten.
    W.I.T. has been passed again
Investors are never shown what Waterford has to offer.
These are two of the biggest problems I know there is more but this is what i look for but never see any movement in it.

In summary we have 8,000 citizens who have chosen not to register. It is their responsibility. I am surprised at the Senator wasting time on a matter where people have made a free choice. Does he plan to force people to register and vote if elected to Dail?
