St Otteran’s death recalled at inquest
A 54-year-old grandmother, who was a patient in St Otteran’s Hospital, Waterford, was fatally stabbed by a male patient in an incident in the hospital, an inquest heard in Waterford, last week.
Maria O’Brien died from multiple stab wounds with a knife in the juggler area to the right side of her chest and blunt force trauma to her head on September 5th, 2014.
On the same occasion a second patient was also seriously injured as well as a member of the nursing staff.
Director of Nursing Gerry Clarke, who has been nursing in the hospital for 34 years, said he knew the deceased woman for a number of years. He gave evidence of formally identifying her body.
Waterford City Coroner John Goff, Solr, noted that a man had been charged in connection with of the death of the deceased woman and he adjourned the inquest pending the completion of legal proceedings.
