Still no sign of funds for Fire Station four years on
Four years after being given the green light, there’s still no funding commitment from Government towards the building of a new headquarters for Waterford City’s emergency services.
Approval for the new Fire Service and Civil Defence operational headquarters on a site at Ballybeg Drive/Kilbarry Road was granted in 2006, and the requisite planning procedures were proceeded with.
Last September the City Council said tenders had been received “and work will progress in early 2010 subject to the availability of capital funding.”
Deputy Brian O’Shea tabled a Dáil question this week asking the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government when he will provide the money for its construction.
However, in a watery response, Minister of State Michael Finneran said funding for the project “will be considered under future capital programmes within the constraints of available resources and will have regard to the fire authority’s priorities, the spread of existing facilities and the totality of demands from other fire authorities for available funding.”
The proposed building will replace the existing fire station near the courthouse at Catherine Street and improve emergency response times.
