TIED TO THE STAKE

“I feel more driven. I feel energised by the pressure and I feel more determined as a result of this. I’m in a good frame of mind and I’m happiest when I’m in that mindset.”
Derek McGrath’s use of language during our recent sit-down interview
at De La Salle College was particularly telling.
He knows he’s got a big job on his hands, and there’s little doubt that the changes he’s made to the Waterford senior hurling panel have not been met with universal agreement. His decision to elevate several
young hurlers at the expense of more experienced but hardly
veteran-level players ahead of a tough League campaign has done little to raise the expectations of many Deise fans five weeks out from the new competitive season.
But he appears clearly at peace with the decisions he’s made in this,
his second winter as Waterford bainisteoir and is determined to see the
job through as best he sees fi t. Hearts and minds, of course, will follow, if matches are won. “I’d say I’m doing more myself this
year in terms of my approach to the job,” he told The Munster Express,
ahead of the panel’s re-assembly for training on Saturday last.
