Tramore had 75 leaks

The town of Tramore suffered 75 individual water leaks during the thaw that followed the heavy pre-Christmas freeze-up.

That was reported to the January meeting of the Town Council by Town Manager Brian White who paid tribute to Council staff who did trojan work over the period. He said some of them did twelve-hour stints in their efforts to restore supply and he mentioned in particular the contributions of Des Corcoran, Water Services Supervisor and Maurice Conway, Deputy Area Engineer.

He joked that one staff member was in trouble with his wife, firstly for failing to get his Christmas shopping done and then not showing up for the Christmas dinner, such was his commitment to the cause.

Cllr Pat Finnerty enquired if lessons had been learned for the future, particularly regarding the engagement of private contractors where necessary to ease the burden on Council staff and restore supplies faster.

Mr White said they always learned from emergency situations such as that which pertained, but while private contractors could be employed in some cases, there were other repairs which had to be overseen by Council personnel because of their greater knowledge.
