Late Danny Tobin

The untimely death took place this week of Mr Danny Tobin, Comeragh Estate, Tycor, Waterford. A well known name and face on the popular music scene for many years, Danny was an excellent singer and musician but will probably be best remembered as a drummer and percussionist with some of the most popular showbands and cabaret groups that played out of Waterford.

Aged 66, his musical career was inextricably linked with that of his close friend and fellow showband star, Don Duggan. In the days of the popular Boat Club dances, Danny played with Don in ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Danny and The Juniors’ before the pair joined the Savoy Showband where they enjoyed great nationwide success in the 1960s including two hit singles.

In 1970, just as the cabaret era was beginning, Don and Danny formed The Partners, a dynamic two-piece group that became one of the most popular and enduring bands in the South East region and one of the few acts guaranteed to pack out their gigs. In recent years, Danny had performed as a solo artiste playing in popular city venues.

His remains were removed from Thompson’s Funeral Home, Barrack Street, on Thursday night to the Church of the Holy Family, Luke Wadding Street. Requiem Mass was celebrated today (Friday) after which interment took place at St Otteran’s Cemetery, Ballinaneesagh.
