Late Phil Murphy

The community of his native Dunhill, the entire county and beyond were shocked and saddened by the tragic accidental death of Phil Murphy on Friday January 22nd.

His funeral arrived to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Dunhill on Tuesday last for requeim mass and burial. The mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Pail Murphy and was concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Gerard Purcell, Rev. Fr. Greg Power and Rev. Fr. David Keating. Dunhill Church Choir was led by soloist Margaret Moore and organist Anne Kavanagh.

Phil’s All Ireland Ploughing Trophy and a sod of the earth he loved to turn were carried to the altar by his sons Cyril and Philip. Daughters Fiona and Julie presented the Offertory Gifts. The concessional prayers were read by Phil’s sister Sr. Thomasina. The esteem and high regard in which Phil and his family are held was truly illustrated by the vast concourse of mourners in attendance, the largest witnessed in the village.

Phil was an active and dedicated member of the County Waterford Ploughing Association. He served as a chairman and secretary for many years and won numerous county championships. He was also the proud winner of an All Ireland Championship. Phil was a dedicated member of the ploughing association and his fellow ploughmen showed their appreciation. They came in droves from every county and stood shoulder to shoulder in a guard of honour to salute one of the most loyal men to plough a furrow.

Phil was a loving and caring husband and father. He and Noeleen were as one and they took great delight in their children and grandchildren. They all have precious memories of great family occasions enjoyed together. We extend sincere sympathy to his heartbroken family, his loving wife Noeleen, sons Cyril and Philip, Daughters Fiona and Julie, daughter in law Becky, son in law Kieran, grandchildren, Michael, Killian and Madeline, also his sister Sr Thomasina, his brother Dec, relations and friends. May the green sod he toiled lay gently on him.
