Rev Fr. John Boyle – An Appreciation

Fr. John Boyle was born in Dungarvan in 1932 and educated by the Christian Brothers. An accomplished goalkeeper, he was a substitute in the Waterford Minor Hurling team that won the All Ireland in September 1948.

He entered St. John’s Seminary on the Monday after the All Ireland. He served in Waterford City in a number of parishes and in 1983 he came to St. John’s Church and remained there until he retired in 2001.

He became the first Parish Priest of St. John’s in 1985, prior to that time, St. John’s was a mensal Parish, which meant that it was administered on behalf of the Bishop. He introduced Ministers of the Eucharist to the parish. In 1999 he introduced the Newsletter. In the eighteen years of service to the parishioners of St. John’s he was most popular with everyone and accomplished a great deal in that time.
