Prisoner programme proves there’s a better way

In the past two months we have featured articles about the recent success of U-Casadh, a Waterford-based programme which assists prisoners upon their release.

And this programme deserves reference this week when set against the backdrop of increased drug use, criminality and the significant spike in the workload of our judges.

The city and county’s drug problem, particularly when it comes to heroin, has escalated over the past two years. The increased rate of robberies in recent months has also risen and has been widely linked to heroin use, with users seeking cash to fund their next ‘fix’.
