Swimming
Congratulations to our senior swimming team which performed brilliantly in the All Ireland Finals recently. The team of Diarmaid Brennan, David O Sullivan, Eoghan Trihy and Ken Breathnach won the 4 X 50 freestyle relay. They also bronze in the 4 X 50 medley relay. Also Ken Breathnach won bronze in the 100m freestyle and he has been selected to represent Ireland at the International Schools Competition in Edinburgh. Well done also to our Junior team of Ben Jacob, Aibhne Breathnach, Jacob Roche and Ciaran Halpin which also performed extremely well, achieving a number of personal bests in the process.
Gaelic Games
It was a busy week for our U 14 hurlers with our U14B team defeating Tramore by 5 4 to 1 2 and our U14A team beating Kilmacthomas by 6 10 to 0 3. Well done to all involved.
Our U14 Gaelic Football panel continue their preparations for the Waterford championship with training on Wednesdays under the watchful eyes of team managers Mr. MacSweeney and Mr. O Neill.
Transition Year
Our Transition year students will spend the next two weeks on work experience. TY 2 History class recently went on a guided tour of the Granary accompanied by their teacher Ms. Betts. Both TY classes visited our national stadium, Croke park. They had a guided tour which included the dressing rooms, warm up area , the press box and a corporate box and the museum. Sean Tyler made the wall of fame when in the hurling arena, he hit a shot at a speed of 130 KM per hour. Four teams from De La Salle College qualified for the Waterford finals of the Student Enterprise Awards.
Mini-Med Programme
A number of our students participated in the mini-med programme over the mid-term break. This was the first time this venture took place outside of Dublin. Students participated in lectures and workshops which took place in WRH and School of Nursing, WIT. The students found it a very worthwhile programme and got a great insight into the world of medicine.
Cross-Country
In the recent East Munster schools cross country the college had a number of successes. Shane Quinn won the senior event while Hugh Morgan won the junior event. Both were impressive winners. The intermediate team won the Waterford schools event. Members of the team were Conor McCarthy, John Skeehan, Alan Slattery, Sean Purcell and James Prendergast. All compete along with Sean Keogh and David O’Leary in the Munster schools on Feb. 26th in Cork.
Basketball
The under 16 basketball team were defeated in the all Ireland quarter final by Kenmare community school in a very closely contested match. The final score was 38-31. team comprised of David O’Leary, Ciaran Kelly, Tom O’Hare, Ronan Cleere, John Claro, Luke Kelly and Christopher Shun. The under 19 team had a victory over Castleisland winning 45-40. The team was Jack Kelly, Eoin Neville, Paul Ryan, Sean Hughes, Adam Deegan, Sean Defoe, Chris Brehny and Dean Purcell. The Well done to the under 14 basketball team who beat Kilkenny CBS last Wednesday, the final score was DLS 53, CBS Kilkenny 9. The team now go on to play Borris V.S. Congratulations to all involved.
