Fiona smashes Junior record

Fiona Dennehy was back on top of the podium at the Leinster Indoor championships in Nenagh last weekend taking gold in the junior walk in impressive fashion. She smashed the Leinster record setting a new PB and championship best of 14.55. While the juveniles had considerable achievements in the relays the Kilkenny athletes competing in the individual Junior, Senior and Masters events also made notable victories. In the Junior events there were six wins – KCH had two with Mary Kate Lanigan in the High Jump (1.65) and Peter Walsh in the Shot Putt(11.82); Gowran also had two golds with John Murphy in the 1500m (4.54.76) and Eleanor Kennedy in the 3000m (14.06.75); Eoin Power, St Joseph’s won the 60m.In the Senior events there were gold medals for Eoin Muldowney, Castlecomer in the 200m, Austin Lee, St Joseph’s in the 60m Hurdles and Sean Maher, Brow Rangers in the 56lbs for Distance.One of the most impressive performers was Verena Fenlon, St Joseph’s. Her tally on Sunday was four golds (60m, High Jump, Long Jump and Shot Putt) and silver in the 800m. Pat Power, St Joseph’s had three golds – 60m, 200m and Long Jump. The ever green, John Gorman, Gowran, competing at M8 level won both 60m and 400m. Two others from the Gowran club had victories at M1 Level – Brendan Kavanagh in 3000m and Emmet McAvineney in Shot Putt. Joe Kelly, Brow Rangers, had double gold winning the Shot Putt and Weight for Distance.
