Joe Gough after the presentation of his gold medal at the Masters European Indoor Championships in Ancona, Italy.

Joe Gough continued his amazing run of success when he won the gold medal in the over 60 800 metres at the European Masters Indoor Championships in Acona, Italy last Thursday. With years of experience in every age group at both European and World level behind him Gough finished second in the semi-final last Tuesday behind Lysenko of Ukraine in 2 minutes 22.08 to easily qualify for the final.
Settled in second place of the nine athletes for most of Thursday’s final Gough made his move heading down the back straight of the final lap and sprinted away quickly putting daylight between himself and the rest of the field to win easily in 2:16.76 ahead of Pierre Faucheur of France (2:18.37) and Marcel Scholten of the Netherlands (2:18.58). Gough made a brave effort to add another medal when he lined out in the final of the 1,500m on Saturday but just missed out when he finished fourth in a field of 20 athletes. The race was won by another Irish athlete Brian Lynch who holds a World’s best time in the event. Lynch clocked 4:42.18 while Gough finished in 4:44.23.
On Saturday morning Brendan Leahy (Waterford) was also in action in the heats of the 400m. For Leahy it was his first taste of this type of competition and he did not qualify finishing fifth in 54.34. On the final day of competition Leahy ran a fine third leg of 4×200m relay where the Irish Men’s team were third with a new national record in that age group of 1:37.11. In the medal table Ireland finished 11th of 34 countires with 11 gold, five silver and six bronze medals.
