European Youths Standard for Orla O’Connor

In Prodebrady in the Czech Republic last Saturday morning Órla O’Connor (Waterford AC) achieved a qualifying time for the 5000 metres race walk at the European Youth Championships in Tbilisi in Georgia in mid July.
The qualifying standard was 25 minutes 30 seconds but Órla was well inside it with a time of 24 minutes 46 seconds. Another Irish athlete Niamh O’Connor (Celbridge) in the same race also secured a qualifying time with 24.34.
As always getting the qualifying standard is not always a certainty of making the team as the selectors have the final say. As the Youths Championships are in Georgia financial constraints may have a bearing on the size of team that travels.
