Double scores defeat in Tralee

St Brendans’s Tralee 72; Waterford 36

Difficult to know sometimes what happens with a team on a given day, having had a tremendous win over Tolka Rovers the previous week and a win over Tramore in the South East League last Tuesday, Waterford travelled to Kerry on Saturday for their game against St Brendan’s, Tralee.

On paper there would be little between these teams but on the court in Tralee last Saturday night there was a vast gap, the Waterford team a total disaster.

It’s hard to know what happened to Waterford after the first period. With little between the teams in the league and Waterford with four wins from five since the start of the year, they made the journey to Kerry full of confidence of putting in another good performance.

All looked well at the start the visitors making the first couple of scores, Tralee came back and at the end of the first period there was just a single between the teams, the home side in front 13 to 12. That was as good as it got for the visitors as they registered just 3 points throughout the whole of the second period while giving up 22.

By half-time they were 20 behind and it just got worse, by the end of the third they were 30 behind and the game was over as a contest.

While Waterford were well beaten and they can have no excuses, making just 3 from 17 free throws, the floor in the gym in Tralee left a lot to be desired, it was exceptionally slippery. The home side were much better able to cope with it than the visitors.
