Great start to year for Waterford side
Queens Belfast 46; Waterford 73
Having not had a game since mid-December, Waterford travelled to Belfast last Saturday for a game that was originally scheduled a week earlier, but due to the inclement travelling conditions, was put back to last weekend.
Travelling with a weakened team it looked a though ask for the team to get a result but that was exactly what they done.
Having made the long journey north the Waterford team were slow to start and having missed a few easy opportunities they found themselves behind after just five minutes. Queens used their home advantage well, making some excellent scores from the corners but the Waterford lads hung in well ending the quarter just three behind 16 to 13.
Waterford upped their game a little in the second period keeping pace with the home team tying the quarter at 17 points each. Daren Murphy with a three to start the quarter and another to finish it ensured the visitors were in a good position at half time just 3 down 33 to 30 to have a go in the second half.
The challenge for the visitors in third quarter often a difficult one for them was to up their game and get ahead and they rose tremendously well to it, scores first from David Hogan then Larry Murphy and finally a three pointer from Andy Piper from the half way line on the buzzer saw them add 23 points to their total while some superb defence from Piper, Nyhan and Begadon kept the home side to just seven, giving the visitors a 53 points to 40 lead going into the forth.
Having set the platform for the win the Waterford team were not going to be denied, with both David Hogan and Larry Murphy in tremendous scoring form with 46 of their teams total between them and the defence holding tight they increased their lead.
With five minutes to go the game was over as a contest and the Waterford team had their biggest win of the season, making the long journey home that little bit shorter.
