More aggressive approach needed at home

Having played very poorly the previous week Waterford had two home games last week to give themselves a chance to get some pride back. On Thursday night last they had Baltic Storm at home in the South East League, then on the following Saturday they had Maree Galway at home in Division 1 of the National League.

National League – Division 1: Waterford 62 Maree Galway 77

Finding scores difficult to come by in the first period, Waterford ended the first period 16 points to 12 behind, other than two good scorers from forward David Hogan there was little for the home support to cheer about. Things got much worse in the second period, Maree adding 23 to their total while the Waterford team managed just 6 almost ending the game as a contest by half time, the Galway team 39 to 18 in front.

Waterford eventually decided to wake as the second half got under way Daren Murphy coming to life with a couple of three pointers and while they never looked like they could win the game they managed to take the quarter 17 to 14 slightly eating into Maree’s lead.

Another three 3-pointers from Murphy in the final period allowed the home team to get as close as 11 points at one stage with about four minutes left, but they had given themselves far too much to do.

Andy Piper with 17 rebounds held his own under the boards but over all this performance left a lot to be desired from the home team, they need to get much more aggressive particularly when playing on their home court.

Waterford Team and Scorers: Darren Murphy (23), Niall Berry, Larry Murphy (5), Steven Begadon (2), Antanas Toliusis (11), Gary Walsh (2), Kieran Nyhan (8), Andy Piper (5), David Hogan (6), Peter Losak.
