Swim star Joe Murphy sets new national record

Tramore teenager Joe Murphy set a new national junior and senior record of 59.60 in winning Men’s Senior 100IM gold at the recent Senior Irish Open Short Course Championships in Lisburn, Belfast.

The 18-year-old Waterford Crystal Swimming Club member also took silver in the 100m Backstroke and bronze in the 100m Freestyle.

About to start sixth year at CBS Tramore, Joe is a son of Paula and John Murphy, Sweetbriar, Tramore. One of Ireland’s best pool prospects – last month he returned from the Irish Open Gala in Limerick with a nine-medal haul, including four National titles, and earlier this summer he swept the boards at the Senior Irish Open Championships with nine victories in nine events – he has been selected as a member of the elite 2012 Development Squad for the London Olympic Games after reaching both the 100m and 50m freestyle qualifying time.
