U14s lose out in Neptune

Last Sunday Wildcats U14 team travelled to Cork for their last league game. This squad of players have improved enormously over the season under the guidance of Anne-Marie Whelan and Alan Barber losing only 2 league games.

A win against Brunell last Sunday would have put them into a play-off against Glanmire for the league title. Wildcats started off nervously knowing what was at stake and trailed midway through the first quarter. However soon the Wildcats side settled down and were leading 12-11 going into the second quarter. Some inexplicable calls in the second quarter by the sole referee put several Wildcats players in foul trouble and sent Brunell repeatedly to the free throw line. However Wildcats still outscored Brunell, including two great baskets by Ciara Barry and lead 22-19 at half-time.

In a very low scoring third quarter Wildcats got into further foul trouble but were 5 points ahead with 8 minutes to play. Unfortunately Wildcats lost 36-31 at the final buzzer. Based on this result a play-off opportunity versus old rivals Glanmire was ruled out but no doubt this squad will learn from this season and have their chance in the near future.
