U16s win again in Cork
Wildcats continued their recent winning streak away to Father Matthews in Cork last Saturday. Wildcats got off to a slow start in the game and were fortunate to trail by only a point at the end of the first quarter with Ruth Kelly and Rachael Taheny doing tremendous work to keep the Waterford team in touch. In the second quarter Wildcats began to show a little more form with Yvonne Corcoran producing a virtuoso performance and hitting two huge three pointers from way downtown. However this still saw the Wildcats trailing by one point at half time. The third quarter started with the young Wildcats hitting a new level of defensive intensity which saw them hold their opponents to a grand score of 4 points in the whole quarter. In the meantime however Wildcats hit their Cork opponents for 18 points with the ever improving Lauren Lawlor hitting ten great points courtesy of excellent under the hoops offensive play.
With Ruth Kelly dominating her own boards and Clare Leavy putting on a show at the point guard spot the game looked to be at the mercy of the Wildcats.
However as one would expect the home team came out fighting in the final quarter and quickly rattled off six unanswered points. After a badly needed time out to reorganise the effort Wildcats once again took control and with Emma Begadon shooting four great points they eventually ran out winners by a score of 47-34.
This was the Wildcats last league game of a season which saw this team only begin to show their true ability at the end. However it is surely only a matter of time until some of these young ladies are proudly wearing a senior Wildcats jersey.
