Waterford finish season to forget
Waterford 62; Maree Galway 75
Playing their final game of the season in Division 1 of the National League, Waterford played host to Galway Titans in the WIT Sports Hall on Saturday night last. While Waterford have had a season to forget the Galway team were looking for a win to ensure their play-off place.
Finding scores difficult to come by in the first period Waterford ended the first period 18 points to 9 behind, other than two three-pointers from David Hogan and Daren Murphy there was little for the home support to cheer about. An improvement in the second period saw seven of the Waterford player’s share 17 points between them while holding their visitors to 18 making the half time score 36 to 26.
A big improvement on the defensive end saw Waterford pull back the lead throughout the third period, giving up just 12 points while making 18, Andy Piper netting nine points and Larry Murphy seven. This left them just 4 behind 48 to 44 going into the final period and all to play for.
Waterford continued to eat into the Titans lead in the final period and with just four minutes to go went a point in front for the first time in the game, 60 to 59.
This was as good as it got for the home team as in the next two minutes a couple of referee calls that could have gone their way went against and it cost them, the Galway team went to the free throw line on six occasions and the home team were left chasing the game.
