Wildcat 54; Glanmire 36
Last Thursday in the Parochial hall in Cork, the Wildcats played a strong Glanmire U15 side against whom they that had narrowly lost at home before Christmas. This however was not the case this time around with the Wildcats still sore from the memory of that home defeat, coming out of the blocks with all guns blazing. They opened up an early lead in the opening quarter and extended this to a 20 point advantage by half-time. Dawn O Sullivan and Claire Leavey did an excellent job defensively making it very difficult for Glanmire to have any sort of an impact.
Some intelligent offense in the 2nd half and some excellent individual play from posts, Kate Sheridan and Clodagh O Callaghan and guards Valarie O Brien, Megan Power and Megan Welsh saw Wildcats run out easy winners on a scoreline of 54-36. It has to be said that the outstanding player for the game was none other than last year’s Wildcats U15 M.V.P. Aoife Brett who finished on 20 points, showing the kind of form that won her that honour with this team last season. Trisha Hamm, Niamh O Brien and Emily Fanning all made their first appearances for the side and showed they all have what it takes to make an impact at this level.
U14 win
With an early start last Sunday the U14 team travelled to Cork to take on St. Anthony’s who had knocked them out of the Cup several weeks previous. A similar defeat looked on the cards as some of the Wildcats players must have forgotten that the clock had gone forward, allowing St. Anthony’s in for some easy baskets and trailing the Cork side by 12 points in the opening quarter. The second quarter saw the Wildcats get to the pace of the game with Chloe Morrisey and Emily Fanning working hard to bring the game back to level scores by half-time. The third quarter was a close affair with the lead changing hands several times. The final quarter saw the Wildcats edge in front with an inspiring 3 pointer from Shannon Keane. Hard work was made of closing out the game however Wildcats finished strong winning 43-36 on the final buzzer. With 4 league games left – 2 home and 2 away – Wildcats must win them all to be in with a chance of taking the league and securing a top four playoff place.
