Wildcats enjoyed a tremendous victory in Cork last Friday night when their Under-16 girls team stormed to victory in the Munster league play-offs.

First up on the night in the semi-final were overwhelming local favourites Skibbereen containing three Irish squad members.

However, with Lauren Lawlor and Emma Begadon fighting for every ball under the boards and Clare Leavey subduing the much vaunted Irish international Skibbereen point guard Wildcats held the local favourites to level scores at half time 16-16.

The third quarter was a very tense one with both teams trading blow for blow and the increasingly exasperated Cork coach searching for ways to open the Wildcats defence.

Crucially however Yvonne Corcoran hit a huge three-pointer to leave Wildcats one ahead come the buzzer.

The final quarter turned into a massacre with Wildcats hitting a massive 22 points with Clare Leavy, Yvonne Corcoran and Rachael Taheny draining three pointers from way downtown and Jenna Norris and Valerie O’Brien running riot on the fast break.

The final score of 47-29 fully reflected the Wildcats dominance in that final quarter.

However the Wildcats coaches were fully aware that this was only really half time as the Rebels from Carraig Na BhFearr, who have dominated the young Wildcats in previous seasons, were successful in the other semi-final.

Straight from the first jump ball Wildcats set about silencing the local partisan crowd. How better to do this than with Yvonne Corcoran once again raising the roof with 11 points in the first quarter including one huge three pointer and three successful free throws when the local team resorted to fouling in an effort to stop her.
