Wildcats tamed all too easily

DCU 93; Bausch and Lomb Wildcats 37

Waterford’s Bausch and Lomb Wildcats brought the curtain down on their National League season last Sunday with a heavy loss to Dublin City University.

The Dubliners were hot favourites for a home win but even they must have been surprised with the ease of this victory in spite of the fact that Wildcats were short regular center Cathy Kavanagh who is out with a knee injury.

This was by far Wildcat’s poorest performance for some time. DCU are an exceptional team who possess many top internationals but nevertheless they are not a 56 point better team than Wildcats, even though a scoreline of 93-37 would suggest so.

Right from the tip-off DCU went about their business in a clinical fashion making the most of every opportunity while Wildcats had a similar amount of scoring chances but trailed 16-3 after just 4 minutes due to poor finishing.

As the game progressed things improved slightly as Wildcats total reached 9 points by the end of the first quarter, leaving DCU in command 28-9. The National Cup winners extended their advantage prior to a hot patch from Wildcat’s Siobhan Power who hit 9 points in a three-minute spell. In fact this helped Wildcats to outshoot DCU 18 points to 15 in this second quarter however still left the score 43-27 to DCU at half-time.

Wildcats’ coaches asked for a big effort in the final quarters from their team; sadly it was DCU who upped their game and ran riot scoring for fun. The Wildcats team looked in a spin as they made decisions one would not expect from a primary school team.
