WIT Wildcats are champions

The WIT Wildcats finished off the season with a victory over Berkeley in this entertaining women’s Division One Kilkenny League Final. Both sides had to come through tough encounters with Matt the Millers to progress to this highly competitive final.

Coaches Kieran Byrne and Tommy O’Mahony had their squad well prepared for this big game and were ready for Berkeley’s challenge. The game started off very slowly with both teams finding it hard to settle, but Berkeley finished the 1st quarter the better.

WIT Wildcats came back into the game strong with some great three – point shooting, but still trailed going into the second half due to Berkeley’s solid defence and poor offensive decisions on WIT Wildcats part. Both teams continued to compete throughout the third quarter; however WIT Wildcats hit a rocky patch and at this point it looked good for Berkeley who were strongly urged on by the home support.

With Berkeley continuing to lead going into the final quarter, WIT Wildcats had to dig deep and continue chipping away at the Kilkenny sides lead. A superb effort on the defensive front meant Wildcats offence came a little easier and the sides were level with 3 minutes to go. WIT Wildcats pushed on in front and never lost the lead till the final whistle.

WIT Wildcats showed great character to come from behind and then lead for the 1st time late in the last quarter and hold on to the win. This was a complete team performance with the entire squad contributing and working so hard throughout the league.

Wildcats Division 1 squad: Grace Maher, Lynn Roche, Helena Rohan, Nicola Kirwan, Elaine Kennington, Siobhan Power, Elizabeth Hannigan, Brid O’Brien, Holly Deegan, Orlaith Bolger, Lisa Dooley, Magda Turkaz, Amy Maguire, Kelly Ryan and Amy King.
