Waterford United manager Roddy Collins still believes the club has a bright future despite another league defeat, the heaviest of his tenure with the team to date. He was still upbeat when he spoke in Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night last.
“ It’s disappointing of course it is to lose four nil but there was some good individual performances. I thought Shane Mackey was absolutely excellent and Dan Pender done really well. Of course you don’t want to be losing 4-0.
“It’s a definite free kick for the first goal. I’ve never seen a worse referee in the League of Ireland. It’s nothing to do with the overcome but it was the first goal and it changed the game totally. It’s a blatant free kick but instead the ball is in the back of the net and things change a little bit.
“The second goal was preventable, very preventable and the third one was a penalty – game over. We only had 13 players and one of them was injured – Crokey, who showed great spirit and wanted to play so fair play to him.
Collins is confident the new players will be signed sooner rather than later.
“Why would I be worried? I’m not worried. If I brought in six or seven players and we performed like that tonight then I would be worried. Things can only get better for us now. You will see new faces. They are waiting to sign, the forms and agreements are all done.
“We are just waiting for them to be sanctioned and once that happens you will see them on the pitch straight away. I know it’s terrible for the lads and terrible for the supporters but I’ve been around this game long enough and there is a reason for everything.
“Every game is tough when you don’t have the players. Do people understand that? This season is a right off but we still have to respect the supporters and we still have to respect the league. I have to respect that I’ve got to bring in the right players for the club.
“There is no point bringing in bodies for the sake of it just so we have six players on the bench. We want to bring in quality players that are going to be here for this season and next season. The players that I have here now I’m deciding on for the rest of this year and next year.
“The future is next week against Finn Harps and we’re still going to compete. We competed tonight but when you have good players and you compete then you win games. When you win games you get a system going and a style in your play. People will see the big picture then.
“If I thought that, that was our lot then I’d be very worried. That’s nothing to where we’re going to be and I can promise you that now. It’s up to us to do our job and I’ll do my job by recruiting the best players to bring this football club forward,” concluded Roddy Collins.
