Can Waterford upset Cavan?
Waterford play Cavan next Saturday in the Semi-Final of the All Ireland Intermediate Championship as part of a double header with the senior semi between Laois and Dublin in Dr Cullen Park, Carlow with a throw-in of 4.15 pm. TG4 will be showing both games live.
Waterford have been on the wrong side of two results with Cavan this year and they won’t want to be reminded of the National League Final, when Cavan ran out 10-point winners. However, a closer look at that game reveals that the sides are a lot more evenly matched than the scoreline would suggest.
The Waterford players have a real conviction that they can beat Cavan but they will need to produce their best performance of the year if they are to progress to the Final at the end of September. They also need to prevent their opponents from scoring goals, an affliction that has been their downfall in the past.
Waterford have lots of established and emerging talent, with younger players like Anne Dunphy, Maria Delahunty, Aileen Wall and Roisin Tobin pushing hard for places. A top-drawer performance by Waterford and anything less than Cavan’s best could see an upset come Saturday evening.
