There was a controversial ending to the last of this year’s Lawlors Hotel County Senior Football Championship games on Sunday last as Ballinameela edged out An Rinn thanks to a point in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Confusion arose after players halted the action when a crack resounded around the ground, that of Liam Ó Lionáin’s leg.
Thinking referee Tim O’Byrne would halt proceedings to allow for medical attention, play unofficially ceased, but since no whistle came, Jim Curran slotted what proved the winning point over the bar for Ballinameela. The white flag was waved after Byrne had confirmed that he hadn’t called play to a halt.
The full-time whistle blew within seconds, much to annoyance of the An Rinn players.
