Cork powered their way to the Munster Under 21 football final with a 10-point victory against Waterford today a Paric Uí Rinn on Saturday last. Waterford, however, can take heart for the fact that their losing margin was less then that of Kerry against Cork the previous week.
Waterford enjoyed the better start, with senior player Sean O’Hare to the fore, as the Deise side took an early 0-2 to 0-1 lead. However, the Rebels fought back to go in front by 0-4 to 0-3 at the close of the opening quarter.
Cork began to find the range and their dominance in the second quarter saw them kick seven unanswered points. Colm O’Neill and David Goold hit a brace each, with Ciaran Sheehan, Colm O’Driscoll and Conor O’Driscoll kicking points to give the home side a 0-11 to 0-3 lead at the interval.
Cork’s continued to dominate in the second half with Goold, Sheehan and O’Neill extending their advantage to 0-15 to 0-3 inside the opening 10 minutes.
Things could have been far worse for the Deisemen but for senior reserve goalkeeper Stephen Enright, who produced a string of amazing saves during the game. It should be pointed out that of Cork’s 19 points, all but three of them came from play.
Ballinacourty’s James O’Mahony struck two points and St Saviours’ Adam Brophy hit one to cut the cork lead, but Cork were in complete control and late points by Mark Collins and Kevin O’Driscoll sealed their passage to the Munster final.
