Decies ladies win southeast derby

Waterford 2-10; Wexford 1-9

Waterford made it two out of two in the Bord Gais National League with a four-point win over neighbours Wexford in Kilmacthomas on Sunday.

Wexford, who were missing some of their first choice players, including full back Leona Tector and goalkeeper Mary Rose Kelly, made the home side work for their victory.

Waterford, playing into the wind, got off the mark in the second minute with a pointed free from Michelle Ryan. Wexford responded with a point from a Deirdre Fox free. Mairead Wall edged Waterford ahead with a point but Wexford replied with points from Lizzie Kent and Catherine Doyle to lead by a point after 10 minutes.

Sinead Ryan levelled the scores soon after, finishing an excellent move started by Aileen Wall and involving Elaine Power and Michelle Ryan. Indeed, Waterford could have gone in front a minute later when Michelle Ryan shot wide when a goal looked possible.

Wexford went ahead with another Fox pointed free on 15 minutes. Waterford netminder Aimee Jordan made a good save from Fiona Rochford after she had run through, before Sinead Ryan restored parity on 18 minutes, finishing off a move started by Aileen Wall.

The Deise women then took the lead with an Aileen Wall point, with Grainne Enright missing a goal opportunity from very close range.
